The time for the doll ceremony, in which the villagers free themselves of sickness and sorrow, has returned, and Aki is proud to assist the town's protector in performing it. But a violent attempt to stop the ceremony led by none other than Aki's own brother soon changes the ceremony to a very desperate battle of kanji - and one where Aki learns more than she would like.
